Resources and Websites for Teaching Mathematics

  • NEW! Illuminations has an activity for teaching partial quotient division called Quotient Cafe.
  • Using an Empty Number Line for Addition (Video) this document outlines details for teaching the empty number line.
  • Jump Method for Subtraction This empty number line method is used in the new MMS 3 for subtraction and this quick video demonstrates this method.
  • Classroom video of students teaching different strategies for 3-digit addition.
  • Math Manipulatives in Schools
  • Fraction tiles, virtual manipulatives (Thanks Cindy)
  • Abacus International Math Challenge is a British website for grades 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8 students. Students complete different math tasks and may choose to submit their solutions to the author of the task for comments.
  • Grade 4-6 Numeracy Tasks were developed to help our students to become mathematical thinkers. Simon Fraser University created these tasks to help teachers create a learning environment to promote "mathematical thinking". These tasks require students to make decisions about assumptions they have. The role of the teacher is to help students decode the task, but then leave the students alone to work in groups to solve the task.
  • Aboriginal Perspectives is a website on MathCentral that has support for the Aboriginal content in our math curriculum. These activities were developed by teachers. This site has content from the Grade 4 and Grade 6 workshops offered in 2011 as well videos, lessons and games that will support most grades in teaching their outcomes. (January, 2013)
