Learning for the 21st Century (Structural Innovation)

Learning for the 21st Century (Structural Innovation)

In the  2009-10 school year, Regina Public Schools introduced Structural Innovation in 14 Structural Innovation Demonstration Schools across the division. In 2010-11, this expanded to include 32 schools and in the 2011-2012 school year, and further expanded in the 2011-2012 school year to include all remaining Regina Public Schools.

Structural Innovation is essentially the implementation and actualization of new ideas regarding how to improve teaching and learning in the classroom, throughout the school, and across the system. These ideas are based on research, on evidence from both own and other school divisions, and on the experience of master teachers and skilled school administrators. These ideas, combined with similar innovative thinking at all Regina Public Schools will help enhance the learning process and the outcomes of all students.

Structural Innovation describes some of the ways that Regina Public Schools is making the best and most successful teaching and learning practices and making them part of public schools for learning for the 21st century.

The four key innovations that have been implemented throughout the school division include:

  • Flexible teaching arrangements and instructional groupings: students matched, and regrouped on a regular basis, with several teachers to better meet learning needs.
  • Teacher collaboration: teachers working together to share their expertise and experiences with each other and to help each student succeed.
  • Interdisciplinary and inquiry-based teaching and learning: teachers and students exploring and developing a deep understanding of various topics and interests together in groups that are not limited by grade level or subject matter.
  • Inclusive practices: helping all students, regardless of their skills and needs, to learn and grow within their own neighbourhood schools and with their peers.
