New Joint School Names Announced.

New Joint School Names Announced.

The Regina Board of Education is pleased to announce the names of the three new public joint schools that will be opening in 2017.

The new names will be:

  • École Harbour Landing School – New Southwest School (Harbour Landing)
  • École Wascana Plains School – New Southeast School (Greens on Gardiner)
  • Plainsview School – New Northwest School (Rosewood Park)

These names were chosen after a Regina-wide "Name Your School" through which several hundred potential names were generated. Submissions came from students, parents, staff, and members of the Regina public.

Regina Board of Education Chair, Katherine Gagne spoke of her gratitude for the entries and about how much of a challenge it was for the Board to narrow the list down to the three that would be used. She added: "we are pleased that the names chosen for our new schools reflect the communities, the heritage and geography in which they will exist for many decades to come.“

With every name suggestion, rationale for the name was requested. The names chosen echo some of the prevalent themes that most spoke to the Board and to the spirit of opening a new school. This rationale included:

  • Close to home and community
  • Evoking a safe return and place of security and comfort
  • Place of preparation to venture forth
  • A sense of multicultural beginnings
  • A reflection and a homage to Treaty 4  indigenous peoples’ heritage
  • A reference to the topography of the area and the endless vistas of the prairie

Director of Education, Greg Enion noted: "this is a very busy, exciting time for us. Not only are we just starting a new school year, but also working towards 2017 when we will be opening three new joint schools, as well as the new Connaught Community School and the new Scott Collegiate at the Mâmawêyatitân Centre. We are looking forward to working closely with parents, students and our school communities to make all our new schools places we can all be proud of – great places of learning that reflect our Shared Values."

Two of the schools will offer dual track programs that include French immersion, École Harbour Landing School and École Wascana Plains School, and Plainsview School will feature an English program. More information about the new schools and the students attending them can be found here: http://www.rbe.sk.ca/news/2016/01/new-school-announcements-2017.

Regina Public Schools has appointed Blair Gullickson as principal on assignment who will be responsible for planning for the opening of the new joint schools.  Mr. Gullickson was most recently Principal of W.S. Hawrylak School. As more information for parents, students and the community is developed, it will be shared with the students and parents who will be moving to the new schools and at: www.rbe.sk.ca. The schools will also have, as do all Regina Public schools, their own websites.
