Announcing the Allan Blakeney Adult Campus
The Regina Board of Education is pleased to announce that commencing in the 2017-18 school year, the Regina Public Schools Adult Campus will be moving from its downtown location and will be renamed the Allan Blakeney Adult Campus.
Currently, the Adult Campus is located in downtown Regina on 11th Avenue. It will be moving to 4210 4th Avenue. This building is the former Wascana School and the current temporary location of École Connaught Community School. The new Connaught School building is set to be open and ready for students in the 2017-18 school year.
“The move of the Adult Campus gives us a rare opportunity to recognize our province’s tenth premier,” says Katherine Gagne. “This school renaming is in response to a suggestion from Premier Brad Wall who asked that Mr. Blakeney be honoured for his contribution to Saskatchewan. He played a critical role in the creation of Medicare and Saskatchewan’s Crown Corporations. He helped give Saskatchewan a national voice and was a leading figure in Canada’s constitutional negotiations. He was also a strong advocate for children and seniors. As an MLA, Mr. Blakeney also served the constituency in which the new Allan Blakeney Adult Campus will reside.”
“The timing of this move works out very well for students and the school division,” says Greg Enion, Director of Education. “Our lease on the downtown location was set to end and we will be having a recently refurbished building vacated at the end of the 2016-17 school year. And while the move will save the school division several hundred thousand dollars annually and make effective use of surplus space, this move will specifically benefit our students. The new location is centrally located and accessible by public transportation. It will also have far more parking space available than the previous location. This latter point was an issue for our young adult students at the downtown location who could not find, nor afford the parking downtown.”
The move from the downtown office building location to the new 4th Avenue location will be conducted over the summer, to create as little disruption to students and staff as possible.
The Adult Campus is a program for adults aged 18-21 who have not completed high school. It offers day and evening courses and a variety of programs that will enhance post-secondary education and career/employment opportunities. The Adult Campus has been serving adult students since 2004 and in 2015-16, had 750 students taking its programs. More information can be found at http://adultcampusweb.rbe.sk.ca/
