Scott Collegiate to Unveil Angels Corner

On Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., Scott Collegiate will unveil a new feature on the school property. Students at Scott Collegiate, including the Grade 10 Construction Project Group, undertook an important project: to build an “Angels Corner” , a space to raise awareness about violence and abuse against women and memorialize victims of this issue in their community. This space is going to include four benches and garden boxes and will be built in front of Scott Collegiate, along 7th Avenue.  We hope that students will learn that their voices matter and that they can help create positive change in the culture of violence against women in our society.

This event coincides with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.  Students will be providing a short, informative program and will also be handing our white ribbons (in participation with the white ribbon campaign:  http://www.whiteribbon.ca/). They will encourage all in attendance to sing a pledge similar to the campaign’s: “I swear never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women this is my oath”

Scott Collegiate emphasizes learning through project-based, cross-curricular education projects and initiatives that benefit the community in and around the school, while striving to ensure that our students obtain their required credits for graduation.  This semester, the school is offering a course that integrates Math, English and Construction.  The goal is to have students gain and develop Math and English skills and meet required curricular outcomes, while participating in hands-on projects that foster the development of construction skills and prepare students to participate as effective and engaged family members, citizens, community members, consumers and producers in Canadian society.
